HYROX Common Injuries: Could Vitamin D Be Part of Your Recovery?
Hamstring strains, ankle sprains, knee pain, shoulder problems and persistent muscle fatigue are common concerns among hard-training athletes. But when injuries keep coming back, should you look beyond your training and check your vitamin D status?
You train hard.
You push yourself.
You finish the workout even when your body is telling you to slow down.
Maybe you do HYROX, CrossFit, padel, tennis, rugby or another demanding sport.
You run.
You lift.
You jump.
You cut.
You rotate.
You carry.
You land.
And then you do it all again.
You look fit.
You feel strong.
You may even pride yourself on having a high pain tolerance.
So when your hamstring keeps tightening, your ankle keeps getting injured, your knee starts hurting again, or your shoulder never seems to fully recover, it is easy to think:
“I just need to train smarter.”
Maybe.
But sometimes, there is more to the story.
When injuries keep happening, it may be worth looking beyond the injured body part and asking:
How healthy is my foundation?
One part of that foundation that is sometimes overlooked is vitamin D.
What Are the Most Common HYROX Injuries?
HYROX combines running with repeated functional movements, strength exercises and high-intensity effort. That combination can place substantial demands on the muscles, tendons, joints and bones.
Common problems athletes may experience include:

The exact injury depends on the athlete, training load, previous injuries, technique, recovery and individual biomechanics.
But knowing the common HYROX injuries is only half of the conversation.
The more important question is:
Why do some athletes keep getting injured—or never seem to fully recover?
That is when we need to look beyond the workout itself.
We need to look at the athlete's recovery, nutrition, bone health, muscle function and overall foundation health.
And that brings us to a commonly overlooked nutrient:
vitamin D.
Your Muscles Are Not the Whole Story
This is something athletes sometimes forget.
We spend so much time thinking about muscle performance.
How much can I lift?
How fast can I run?
How many repetitions can I do?
Can I beat my previous time?
Can I go heavier?
But your muscles are not working alone.
Your body also relies on:
Bones to provide the framework.
Joints to allow movement.
Tendons to transmit force.
Ligaments to provide stability.
Nerves to coordinate movement.
Blood vessels to deliver oxygen and nutrients.
And all of these structures have to tolerate the physical demands you place on them.
Imagine upgrading the engine of a car while forgetting about the tyres, suspension and chassis.
The engine may become more powerful.
But the rest of the system still has limits.
Your body works in much the same way.
You can become stronger faster than some of your tissues can adapt.
Hamstring Strains, Ankle Sprains, Knee Pain and Shoulder Problems
If you participate in HYROX, CrossFit, padel, tennis or rugby, you may already be familiar with some of these problems.
Hamstring strains
Fast running, acceleration and fatigue can place significant demands on the hamstrings.
Ankle sprains
Running, jumping, landing and rapid changes of direction challenge ankle stability.
Knee problems
Repeated squatting, lunging, running, jumping and changes in direction can place substantial loads on the knee.
Groin injuries
Cutting, acceleration, lateral movement and repeated loading can challenge the muscles around the hip and groin.
Shoulder problems
Lifting, pulling, carrying, throwing and repetitive overhead movements can place considerable demands on the shoulder.
Tendon problems
Tendons adapt to loading, but their adaptation does not necessarily happen as quickly as an athlete's fitness improves.
The important question is not:
“Can I tolerate the workout?”
It is:
“Can my entire body recover from the workload I am giving it?”
When “No Pain, No Gain” Goes Too Far
Many serious athletes develop a very different relationship with pain.
Pain can become normal.
Soreness becomes expected.
Fatigue becomes something to overcome.
A burning muscle can feel like proof that the workout was effective.
And there is a psychological reward that comes from pushing through something difficult.
For some athletes, the harder the session feels, the more satisfying it becomes.
But we need to distinguish between training discomfort and an injury signal.
Your ability to tolerate pain is not the same thing as your body's ability to repair tissue.
You can become mentally tougher.
You can become better conditioned.
You can learn to push through fatigue.
But mental toughness does not make a tendon heal faster.
It does not automatically strengthen a ligament.
It does not make a bone recover instantly from repetitive loading.
And it does not correct an underlying nutritional deficiency.
Sometimes the strongest thing an athlete can do is stop and ask:
“Why am I not recovering?”
The Part Athletes Often Forget: Bone Health
Here is where I particularly want athletes to think differently.
When you train hard, you are not only asking your muscles to become stronger.
You are also placing mechanical stress on your bones.
Appropriate exercise can be beneficial for bone health.
But repetitive loading, rapid increases in training volume and inadequate recovery can contribute to bone stress injuries.
Stress fractures are one example.
And this is where nutrition becomes part of the conversation.
Your bones need calcium.
Your body needs vitamin D to help absorb calcium and maintain normal bone metabolism.
Vitamin D is also involved in normal muscle function. (ods.od.nih.gov)
That does not mean vitamin D deficiency explains every stress injury.
It does not.
But it does mean that vitamin D status is worth considering as part of overall musculoskeletal health, particularly when an athlete is experiencing recurrent problems.
Could Vitamin D Be Part of Your Recovery?
Let's be clear.
I am not saying:
“Your knee hurts because you are low in vitamin D.”
Or:
“Take vitamin D and your tendon injury will heal.”
Those statements would be far too simplistic.
The scientific evidence does not support vitamin D as a universal treatment for sports injuries.
Research has found associations between vitamin D status and aspects of musculoskeletal health, but studies investigating whether supplementation prevents sports injuries or improves recovery have produced mixed findings.
A systematic review of randomized controlled trials in elite athletes found potential benefits of vitamin D supplementation for some measures of strength, aerobic capacity and anaerobic power, but concluded that more research is needed regarding bone health and injury risk. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis also found that people with stress fractures had, overall, lower vitamin D levels than controls. However, the athlete subgroup did not show a statistically significant difference. This is another reminder that vitamin D should be considered one factor among many, rather than an explanation for every sports injury. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
So why talk about vitamin D?
Because sometimes the simplest things are the easiest to overlook.
“But I Train Outdoors. Surely My Vitamin D Is Fine?”
This is where I have to admit something.
I recommend that many of my scoliosis patients keep their vitamin D status in check.
But sometimes I have neglected to remind my fellow athletes to do the same.
Why?
Because I made an assumption.
They exercise.
They are active.
They spend time outdoors.
They look fit.
Therefore, surely their vitamin D must be fine.
But that assumption can be wrong.
Studies have found that vitamin D inadequacy can occur even among athletes. A systematic review and meta-analysis involving more than 2,300 athletes found vitamin D inadequacy was common, with risk varying according to factors including sport and season. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
Another systematic review of elite athletes found vitamin D insufficiency remained relatively common. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
And being outdoors does not guarantee an adequate vitamin D level.
Sun exposure varies.
Training schedules vary.
Clothing varies.
Sunscreen use varies.
Diet varies.
Individual biology varies.
Some athletes also spend most of their training time indoors.
Fitness is not a blood test.
Vitamin D and Muscle Function
Vitamin D is often discussed as a “bone vitamin,” but its role is broader.
Vitamin D is involved in normal muscle function and calcium metabolism. Severe deficiency can cause muscle weakness and bone problems. (ods.od.nih.gov)
For an athlete, this matters because performance is not just about how much muscle you have.
It is about how effectively your entire musculoskeletal system functions together.
That includes your bones.
Your joints.
Your muscles.
Your tendons.
Your nervous system.
And your ability to recover between sessions.
But again, vitamin D should not be treated as a universal solution for muscle soreness.
If you are constantly fatigued, there may be many possible reasons.
Look at the whole picture.
What If You Keep Getting Injured?
If you are an avid athlete and you keep experiencing injury after injury, don't only examine the location of the pain.
Look at the foundation.
1. Training load
Have you increased your volume or intensity too quickly?
Are you stacking high-intensity sessions without enough recovery?
2. Recovery
Are you sleeping enough?
Are you giving the same tissues enough time to recover?
3. Nutrition
Are you consuming enough calories and nutrients for the amount of training you are doing?
4. Protein and carbohydrate intake
Your body needs adequate nutritional resources to support training and recovery.
5. Vitamin D
Ask your doctor or healthcare professional whether checking your 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level is appropriate.

6. Bone health
Repeated stress injuries should not simply be dismissed as “part of training.”

Movement patterns, mobility, strength asymmetries and technique may contribute to recurrent injuries.

Persistent fatigue or repeated injuries can sometimes be a reason to discuss broader medical or nutritional factors with your healthcare professional.
What Vitamin D Level Should Athletes Have?
This is where I would encourage athletes to be careful with social-media advice.
There is no reason to chase an arbitrary “perfect” vitamin D number simply because someone online says athletes should have one.
According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, a 25(OH)D concentration of 50 nmol/L (20 ng/mL) or above is adequate for most people for bone and overall health. Levels below 30 nmol/L (12 ng/mL) are considered too low, while levels above 125 nmol/L (50 ng/mL) may be associated with adverse effects. (ods.od.nih.gov)
Your healthcare professional can interpret your result in the context of your individual health.

More is not always better.

That is the part we need to pay attention to.
Don't Just Train the Engine. Maintain the Chassis.
I often think of the body like a high-performance vehicle.
Your muscles are the engine.
Your cardiovascular system is the delivery network.
Your nervous system is the control system.
Your bones and joints are part of the chassis.
Your tendons and ligaments help transmit and control force.
And nutrition provides some of the raw materials your body needs to maintain the entire system.
You wouldn't keep increasing engine power while ignoring the condition of the tyres, suspension and chassis.
So why do we sometimes do that with our bodies?
We train the engine and forget the foundation.
A Message to My Fellow Athletes
I am writing this partly as a reminder to myself.
Sometimes, even healthcare professionals can fall into stereotypes.
When I see someone doing CrossFit, HYROX, tennis, padel, rugby or another demanding sport, I may automatically think:
“They are active. They are strong. They are probably healthy.”
But athletes are not healthcare professionals simply because they know how to train their bodies.
And being exceptionally fit does not make anyone immune to nutritional deficiencies, overuse injuries or health problems.
So if you are the person who is always training...
The person who says:
“I can push through it.”
The person who keeps getting another hamstring strain, ankle sprain, knee problem, shoulder injury or tendon issue...
The person who feels exhausted despite being extremely fit...
Maybe it is time to look at the bigger picture.
Ask your doctor whether you should check your vitamin D level.
And while you're at it, take a look at your foundation health.
Because your body is not just the muscle you are training today.
Your muscles are the engine.
Your bones and joints are part of the chassis.
Your nervous system is the control system.
Your cardiovascular system is the delivery network.

Train hard.

Should athletes take high-dose vitamin D?
Not automatically. The appropriate dose depends on your vitamin D status, health and individual circumstances. High-dose vitamin D should not be taken simply because you train hard.
Can I be vitamin D deficient even if I exercise?
Yes. Physical fitness and vitamin D status are not the same thing. Athletes can have inadequate vitamin D for a variety of reasons, including limited sun exposure, indoor training, diet and individual differences.
The Bottom Line
If you are an avid HYROX athlete, CrossFitter, tennis player, padel player, rugby player, golfer or simply someone who trains hard, don't measure your health only by your performance.
A personal best tells you what your body achieved today.
It does not necessarily tell you how well your body is coping with everything you are asking of it.
If injuries keep returning...
If your muscles never seem to recover...
If you are constantly fatigued...
If your training keeps increasing but your body keeps complaining...
Look at the foundation.
Check your training.
Check your recovery.
Check your nutrition.
Check your bone health.
And ask your healthcare professional whether it is appropriate to check your vitamin D level.
Because sometimes the missing piece isn't another workout.
Sometimes, it is taking care of the body underneath the workout.
